Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ of at least 6-months after the date you plan to return home.
If your passport was renewed early, before October 1st 2018, you may have extra months added to the 10-year validity period. These extra months are no longer valid as your passport must not be more than 10 years old under the new rules.
Example: If your passport was issued on 10 April 2016 and expires on 10 October 2026:
- On 11 April 2026, it is over 10 years old and cannot be used for the EU, even though it is still "valid" for 6 months
